New from CPV Manufacturing: A Ball Valve Designed for Acetylene, Over-Engineered for Everything Else

After decades of engineering precision valves for the military and industrial gas markets, CPV Manufacturing is bringing that same standard of performance to the ball valve, starting with the most challenging industrial application. The company today announced the launch of the BV-5-FFKM, a heavy-duty ball valve purpose-built for acetylene trailer service, now available and shipping.

Designed as the main manifold valve for acetylene transport trailers, the BV-5-FFKM controls the loading and offloading of gas at customer sites. Given acetylene’s well-recognized volatility, the valve is rated to 5,000 psi in service and tested to withstand 20,000 psi; engineered to maintain containment even in the event of an acetylene decomposition inside the trailer.

The BV-5-FFKM was developed in response to a clear gap in the market: current suppliers serving this application did not make it a priority, resulting in high prices and long lead times for a critical component required for acetylene gas delivery.

Currently available valves require customers to weld fittings separately, adding unnecessary cost, labor and time to every installation, while also posing the possibility of error that could compromise valve performance.

The BV-5-FFKM integrates the fittings directly into the valve bonnet, eliminating field welding entirely. Additional features include a cavity relief system to prevent trapped gas in the ball cavity, FFKM O-ring seals for superior leak resistance even in the presence of lubrication oil, and corrosion-resistant stainless-steel construction.

“Acetylene is one of the most demanding gas transport applications in the industry, and we built this valve to exceed its specifications,” said David London, President and CEO of CPV Manufacturing. “Our heritage is engineering valves that perform without compromise — for the most critical applications in the world, including meeting military specifications for the U.S. Navy. The BV-5-FFKM reflects that same standard. Because it’s overbuilt for acetylene, it’s an excellent choice for virtually any gas transport application.”

The valve has been qualified for use in North America, and CPV is actively pursuing international certification. All testing has been conducted per applicable ISO standards, with cycle, pressure, and stress test data available upon request. The valve is designed with flexibility for different fitting sizes and configurations to accommodate various customer requirements.

The BV-5-FFKM ball valve is currently available in a one-inch size, with plans to expand the lineup to include three-quarter-inch, half-inch, and quarter-inch.
